We performed several tests on this VPN including Netflix, Gaming, VOIP and the most importantly ExpressVPN Speed Test. These tests were conducted mainly on US and Europe servers. We also conducted tests on the farther servers to check out how much speed drop occurred during redirection over long-ranged servers.
Spoiler alert: ExpressVPN didn’t disappoint us in most of the tests but has one drawback.

ExpressVPN Speed Test
Speed is one of the most important factors when it comes to deciding the choice for VPN provider. ExpressVPN is best known for the fast and secure connection it provides across servers.
During our ExpressVPN Speed Test, we tested mainly through US and Europe servers as they provide one the fastest and secure connectivity. We also ran a few tests for long-range connection to check speed drop when connecting across further regions. We expected a drop of up to 50% in speed but the results were much better than expected over a long-range connection.
ExpressVPN Speed Test – US Server:
The US connection has a capacity of speed up to 600Mbps which is was impressive. During our test, we found the speed in a range between 200-300 Mbps which is more than enough for any possible internet use. The lowest speed which we recorded came about 180 Mbps. This high-speed figure won’t matter much if you have a moderate speed internet connection and you would get very smooth internet connection overall even at peak times of high traffic.
ExpressVPN Speed Test – Europe Server:
The Europe connection showed excellent results too. The average speed was around 80-95 Mbps during the testing phase. The speed depends much on connection capacity and the performance we found was up to the mark.
ExpressVPN Speed Test – Long Ranged Servers :
We have measured and average out the speed drop faced during our testing time. We compared the results with the US and Europe Server. Long Ranged server represents server most further to your place of testing. We tested the results from a US location.
US Server: 6-7% speed drop
Europe Server: 9-11% speed drop
Long Ranged Server: 38%
The Long Ranged results were impressive as we expected the speed to drop much more during redirection but the results turned out to be impressive. ExpressVPN offers “recommended server” feature to choose server with fastest available internet speed based on proximity to the server and available bandwidth.
ExpressVPN Features Testing:
ExpressVPN offers various features and we are going to test them in terms of the experience. Here we have a look at how ExpressVPN performs during Streaming (Netflix), Gaming (Dota 2), VoIP (Skype) and Torrent (Downloading).
1. ExpressVPN for Netflix:
One of the major benefits of using ExpressVPN is access to the Geoblocked content it provides. Popular streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon-Prime have copyright agreements and can’t broadcast all their catalogues outside the United States. ExpressVPN can help us to bypass this restriction and stream these contents in HD.
Access to US libraries: Working
Access to UK libraries: Working
How to Fix ExpressVPN Netflix Geo-blocking Error?
We also tested other libraries in India, Brazil and Peru. They all seemed to work well. while some faced problem of Geobloacking but were fixed by accessing the content through nearby servers. (ExpressVPN has 25+ US servers available for use)
Along with Netflix ExpressVPN can also stream Geoblocked content on other platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Hulu, Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer, HBO Go and other platforms.
2. ExpressVPN for Gaming:
Gaming is the most challenging area for a VPN to perform. Gaming requires absolute lag-free connection and minimum data packet loss when gaming. Our team tried out several games, even more than required using ExpressVPN to check its connectivity and data loss.
ExpressVPN turned out one of the best VPN for gaming. Games ran as smooth with VPN as without it. We run a few tests and averaged out the result.
Average Ping: 10-40 ms
Average Packet Loss: Negligible
ExpressVPN for Gaming is one of the best choice available.
3. ExpressVPN for Torrenting:
Torrent usage may put you under the surveillance of many copyright organisations and government in many countries. ExpressVPN usage makes you invisible to these organisations and hence can help you safely browse torrent websites.
Download speed using ExpressVPN was similar to the normal download speed with negligible loss of speed while redirecting data.
4. ExpressVPN for VoIP services:
VoIP services like Skype, Viber and WhatsApp can be hacked by attackers leading to potential data leak and fraud. VPN usage ensures a safe and secure connection on VOIP services.
We tested these services and found no data-leak on these services. Read the Security portion below to be ensured about the safety of using ExpressVPN.
ExpressVPN Security and Privacy:
ExpressVPN Origin Explains the Security Level
Security and Encryption are the most important aspect of VPN service which should never be compromised for at any cost. ExpressVPN origin into the company that it stands today has an interesting story that goes with “Assassination of Andrei Karlov“
In December 2017, ExpressVPN came into the spotlight in relation to the investigation of the assassination of the Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov. Turkish investigators seized an ExpressVPN server which they say was used to delete relevant information from the assassin’s Gmail and Facebook accounts. Turkish authorities were unable to find any logs to aid their investigation, which the company said verified its claim that it did not store user activity or connection logs, adding; “while it’s unfortunate that security tools like VPNs can be abused for illicit purposes, they are critical for our safety and the preservation of our right to privacy online“. ExpressVPN is fundamentally opposed to any efforts to install ‘backdoors’ or attempts by governments to otherwise undermine such technologies.” – Wikipedia
This led to the huge popularity of ExpressVPN and furthermore investment into making this technology even more secure and encrypted.
The three aspects of ExpressVPN security that you must know are High-End Encryption, No-logs Policy and Kill-Switch.
ExpressVPN uses the highest level of encryption out there to make sure your identity stays protected. It uses 256-bit AES encryption, which combines AES 256-bit cypher with a 4096-bit RSA key and SHA-512 HMAC authentication. This ensures there are several layers of security and no breach is possible. Even the world’s most powerful computer would take billions of years to decrypt just 0.1% of the data it holds.
This policy of ExpressVPN states that it keeps no log of your Internet history, Websites visited, Online Activity or any of your personal information. This policy has stood the test of time and ensures that you stay anonymous online.
There may be situations in which your VPN may drop for a fraction of second or in case of some system error there may be a chance of your identity being compromised. That is where Kill-Switch feature of ExpressVPN kicks in and blocks all traffic going through your network ensuring no leakage of your private data.
